Synopsis

February 28 post-modern coup is undoubtedly one of the darkest spots in Turkish democracy history. This anti-democratic process of the recent history of Turkey has been extremely effective in life changes the axis of Turkish politics. The military intervention in the history as a "post-modern coup" is very productive process. The most effective method of a process conception is to examine in detail the actors who play role in process. The dominant actor of course has become the army. The army set the balance of democracy to combat against fundamentalism. According to the army, the first domestic threat was "fundamentalism" and had to be disposed of immediately. In this process, "fundamentalism" and "terrorism" were put on the same scale and sometimes a serious of rhetoric was made that the fundamentalism was more dangerous than terrorism (PKK). The February 28 post-modern coup, as the name suggest, was carried out with different methods. Instead of directly intervening in the process, the military tried to legitimize the coup by taking the support of the media, non-governmental organizations, opposition parties, universities, bureaucracy and judicial organs. There is no consensus as to when the February 28th period began and when it ended. In order to make the process clear, it is necessary to observe the activities and policies of the ruling Welfare Party. Democracy, secularism and political İslam will also be discussed in the workshop on 28 February. Moreover, the developments before and after the process will be extensively addressed. This study aims to elucidate the complexity of the process by taking the dynamics behind the post-modern coup of February 28th. The study is important in terms of bringing together all the official and non-official actors involved in the post-modern coup on February 28th.
