Synopsis

Introduction and Purpose: The most important priority of patient safety, which is one of the important parameters of the health care system; It is to reduce patient harm caused by errors by trying to prevent errors that occur due to health care services. It should not be forgotten that medication errors, which threaten patient safety and are the most common medical errors (malpractice), are preventable. Nurses have important responsibilities in the preparation and administration of medications; Mistakes they make during these processes can cause harm to sick individuals and even cause bad consequences, including death. It is stated that the reason for medication errors, which are among the most common medical errors in the world and in our country, is that nurses do not apply the eight correct principles in medication administration. It has been observed that more medication errors are made in newborns and children than in adults, and these errors are listed as wrong time, wrong dose and wrong patient, respectively. In drug administration in newborn and pediatric patients; A small error in the drug dose can cause more harm than the adult patient. The aim of this review is to determine medication administration errors, risk groups and the responsibility of the nurse in the health care system.

Conclusion: Medication administration in newborn and pediatric patients is different and more complex than in adult patients, causing an increase in the error rate in medication administration. It was concluded that the number of studies on medication errors in children and newborns, who are at risk groups, is low and more comprehensive studies are needed.
