The spleen is an intraperitoneal organ located in the left hypochondriaca region. It is of clinical importance due to its hematologic and immunologic role. In left rib fractures, where the incidence of injury is the highest, partial or complete splenectomy can be seen due to excessive bleeding in the peritoneal cavity caused by rupture. Some congenital variations such as lobulation of the spleen or accessory spleen can be commonly seen. Splenectomy is vulnerable to various surgical complications and therefore surgeons need to efficiently preserve and protect splenic tissue. Laparoscopic splenectomy is the standard splenectomy method for normal to moderately enlarged spleens. For larger spleens, it is an alternative treatment option to the hand-assisted technique of open splenectomy.
