Synopsis

Medication use during pregnancy is quite common. Physiological changes that occur during pregnancy and genetic differences between individuals make the effects of the medication used on the mother and fetus unpredictable. Analgesics are the most commonly used preparations in all trimesters of pregnancy, after vitamins. Paracetamol (acetaminophen; acetyl-p-aminophenol, APAP) is the most commonly used analgesic and antipyretic drug during pregnancy in many countries. Although the use of APAP during pregnancy has been considered safe for years; recent studies, although rare, APAP use during pregnancy has been associated with an increase in cryptorchidism, low intelligence level, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and neurocognitive development problems. It has been determined that these risks occur mostly in high doses and long-term use, and when necessary, short-term and appropriate dose use does not increase these risks. On the other hand, untreated high fever during pregnancy; may cause adverse fetal effects such as neural tube defects, cleft palate, and congenital heart defects. For this reason, when necessary, use it only when necessary, at the lowest effective dose, and for a short time, to protect the health of the mother and the fetus, however, avoid routine use of APAP during pregnancy.
