Synopsis

Birth is a unique experience that is unique to every woman. This experience causes many physiological and psychological changes throughout a woman's life. The fact that women find vaginal birth traumatic causes an increase in the desire for a cesarean section. When we look at the world in general, it is seen that there is a serious increase in cesarean section rates. New practices have been introduced in the world and in our country in order to prevent unindicated cesarean births. Every woman can experience fear due to birth. Tokophobia refers to the fear of childbirth that women have for various reasons. Women avoid normal birth due to negative obstetric experiences, false or traumatic birth stories they hear from third parties, and various psychological reasons. Women with tokophobia think that they or their baby may be harmed during birth. Studies have shown that women experiencing tokophobia develop more birth complications, the active phase of labor is longer, and the need for emergency cesarean section is higher. If a woman experiences a risky situation during her pregnancy, has a different birth than she planned, or complications develop during birth, this is an unexpected situation for the woman and can turn into birth trauma. Severe obstetric trauma experienced during birth can also cause post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). If a woman refuses to talk about her birth experience or is afraid to talk about the birth process even though it is her first pregnancy, it is argued that tokophobia and a traumatic birth process can be prevented by preventing women from approaching birth by ensuring that their fears and concerns are eliminated by receiving qualified midwifery care during pregnancy. It is also argued that birth trauma is a more complex and comprehensive concept than known and that birth trauma should be considered as a postpartum mental health problem.
