Synopsis

The production of natural stone and marble-looking glazed porcelain tiles has been increasing in recent years due to the developments in different production practices and digital printing technologies in the production of ceramic tiles. In glazed porcelain tiles, after the polishing process performed at the final stage of production, glaze compositions are used that provide depth in the surface appearance and give a shiny appearance. In full lappato glazed porcelain tiles, the pores that appear on the surface after polishing negatively affect the product quality in terms of both appearance and technical aspects. In this study, it was aimed to examine the porosity that appears on the product surface after polishing in glazed porcelain tiles, depending on the glaze composition. The effect of using raw materials that cause gas release during the firing process in the glaze recipe on porosity was investigated. For this purpose, calcite was gradually increased and used instead of wollastonite, which was used as the CaO source in the glaze recipe. Glazes prepared in different calcite ratios were produced under laboratory conditions and applied to the porcelain tile body. Polishing process was applied to the obtained glazed porcelain tiles, and surface porosity examinations were made after polishing and evaluated comparatively. It has been determined that the use of raw materials that cause gas release in the glaze recipe has a significant effect on the amount of pores formed on the surface of fully polished glazed porcelain tiles and increases the amount of pores with increasing usage rates.
