Synopsis

Throughout human history, behaviors, emotions, and thoughts have been a subject of curiosity and the focus of scientific research. While considered as the guiding forces in the flow of daily life, emotions and thoughts can undergo changes when influenced by events that one vividly imagines or cannot forget. The concept of rumination, defined as getting stuck in anxious thoughts and recurring negative thoughts, suggests that the emotions and thoughts directing human behaviors can be negatively affected by the perception of rumination. Within the realm of sports, mental skills and performance are acknowledged as crucial components among the physical performance factors. Therefore, it is a reality that the emotions and thoughts directly influence the performance required for achieving the goals and sporting success in sports. The perception of rumination plays a crucial role, especially for athletes, in reaching the desired performance by dwelling on positive or negative experiences from the past. In sports, rumination can negatively impact athletes' mental health and performance. Coping with rumination and achieving better mental health and performance for athletes is possible through the use of mindfulness, mental empowerment, and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques.
