Synopsis

Rising population and the increasing number of vehicles, the chal-lenge of determining the optimal routes between different points, unexpected vehicle breakdowns, the impact of inefficiencies in public transportation systems on passenger and service quality, and critical issues such as road safety pose significant threats to the transporta-tion sector. In addressing these issues within this critical domain, it is evident that there is a growing need for Geographic Information Sys-tems (GIS) to play a crucial role in AI-based solutions, especially considering the direct correlation with location. GIS and AI-based transportation studies possess the capabilities to offer solutions to these problems, including traffic management and optimization, route planning, autonomous vehicles, vehicle maintenance and fault pre-diction, public transportation optimization, services related to traffic, and road safety. These studies have competencies that can facilitate the quick resolution of fundamental transportation problems and enable the integration of solutions into daily life, thereby providing sustainable transportation systems. In this context, based on Scopus, 401 articles from the period 2000-2023 were considered, and they were processed using the Scopus online tool and VOSviewer softwa-re. The aim of the study is to guide researchers in the field of Geog-raphy and Geographic Information Systems with the results obtained.
