Synopsis

It is very important for the child to get acquainted with literary products that develop different thinking skills, expand the boundaries of the imagination, and increase personal pleasure as they read and tell. With the beginning of primary school, children begin to create the world of reading by turning to the types of children's literature that arouse curiosity and attract their attention. The aim of this research is to determine the types of children's literature that primary school 4th grade students prefer to read. Research data were collected with a questionnaire developed by the researchers. The sample of the research consists of 764 students studying in the 4th grade in primary schools located in Mersin city center in the 2021-2022 academic year. The research was designed in quantitative research type and descriptive survey model. As a result of the research, it was determined that the students preferred the fairy tale genre the most. It has been observed that there are significant differences between the genders of the students and the genres they prefer to read. In addition, it was concluded that 60% of the students preferred to read at most seven genres. It has been observed that students prefer to read narrative texts rather than informative and poetic texts. Based on the results of the research, it has been suggested that primary school 4th grade students be introduced to different genres.
