Synopsis

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous endocrine-metabolic dysfunction with a high prevalence (5-10%) that affects women's reproductive functions and is characterized by oligoovulation and hyperandrogenism. Its etiology is unclear and is closely related to insulin resistance (IR) in its pathophysiology and long-term metabolic consequences (such as early development of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease). To better understand what PCOS is, it's important to know how PCOS is defined and categorized. Have signs and symptoms similar to PCOS; Specific disorders such as hyperprolactinemia, non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and Cushing's syndrome must be excluded for an accurate diagnosis of PCOS. In cases where clinical findings suggest PCOS, it can be supported by biochemical tests and ultrasonographic findings. In the laboratory evaluation of the patients, hyperandrogenemia is observed. The most common hyperandrogenism finding in PCOS is hirsutism. In addition to these findings, an increase in LH and LH/FSH levels may be observed. Women with irregular menstrual periods are approximately 91% likely to have PCOS. PCOS, which is the most common cause of chronic anovulatory infertility, has recently come to the fore as a public health problem due to its health risks such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease and endometrial carcinoma. Because of the diagnostic difficulties of PCOS, joint evaluation of primary care providers, gynecologists, and endocrinologists may be recommended. The importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the management of PCOS is increasing day by day.
