Synopsis

Although the function and various definitions of the phenomenon of humor are at the center of humor studies, research conducted by different disciplines on different cultures reveals that humor is a concept specific to the society in which people live. While different disciplines have developed different approaches and perspectives on humor from past to present, postmodernist thinkers use different types of humor to criticize society and draw attention to problems. In other words, the techniques and methods used in postmodern humor differ from the characteristics of traditional humor. In this sense, the loss of the influence of grand narratives since the second half of the 20th century, the radical changes in the post-war western society have led to the erasure of the line between art and daily life and the emergence of a new social order. Considering that the studies on humor are generally conducted in the context of the modern world, this study examines the position of humor and the social and cultural function of humor in the postmodern process in which metanarratives are deconstructed and replaced by temporary micro-works.
