Synopsis

If the artist is defined as "a person who uses his/her knowledge, expertise and relationship with the truth in the field of aesthetic struggle", the "role" assumed by the artist in the context of contemporary art policies institutionally constructed in Turkey in the 1990s and the "function" of the artist in the structure of contemporary society can be subjected to a critical analysis. What knowledge does the artist possess today? What are the areas he/she thinks and designs differently from the masses? Most importantly, does he/she assume a "poetic" role without being tied to a one-to-one political engagement?

The 1990s brought about a great differentiation in daily habits in Turkey and this process continues to increase every year. The Internet, mobile phones, shopping malls, business magazines, and private universities are just a few of the elements that constitute indicators in this institutionalization.  The most important parameter that marks this period is the transition from producing goods to producing knowledge. In this study, it is argued that the most appropriate model for reading today's artists as a "social type" in sociological terms is the concept of the "new middle class" and the subject is analyzed in the axis of the concept of "new middle class".
