Marital Satisfaction, Conflict, and Adjustment in the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Systematic Review

Synopsis

The aim of this study is to systematically examine the research on marital satisfaction, conflict and adjustment during the COVID-19 pandemic. The literature review was conducted in the Web of Science database, which includes the internationally respected indexes SSCI, SCI, SCI-E and ESCI. In the research, 33 studies were included in the systematic review process. A total of 37,785 participants were reached in these studies. In 18 of the studies, the variable of marital satisfaction, in 6 of the studies the variable of marital adjustment, in 7 of the studies the variable of marital conflict, in one of the studies the variables of marital satisfaction and adjustment, and in one of the studies the variables of relationship quality and conflict were considered together. Almost all of the studies examined within the scope of the research were conducted with quantitative research methods. Only one study was conducted with mixed method. It was stated that 14 of the studies were conducted with the relational research model, 9 with the cross-sectional research model and 8 with the longitudinal research model. In addition, marital satisfaction, marital conflict and marital adjustment were found to have significant relationships with different socio-demographic, psychological and social variables. The current findings may contribute to mental health professionals and researchers who provide counseling services for married couples.
