Synopsis

In this study it is focused on the assessment of the tourism potential of Hatay, one of the provinces in Turkey endowed with a unique cultural mosaic, and its district, İskenderun. The research explores how the impacts on local-level economic and social factors can be evaluated within the scope of sustainable tourism. The ancient name of Iskenderun is Alexandreia. According to the Hellenic language, Alexandros (İskender) translates to 'Land of Alexander. In order to distinguish it from other cities bearing the same name, İskenderun was called Alexandreia Minor (Little Alexandria) during the Roman period and Alexandretta in the Crusader period. İskenderun and its surroundings possess historical structures, cultural diversity, and natural beauties that date back to its old history. Although the city is known for its industrial feature, it is in a position to have a say in the name of tourism with the articulation of its tourism resources. Despite being recognised for its industrial features, the city is strategically positioned to have a significant role in tourism through the integration of its tourism resources. Indeed, İskenderun is a city on the verge of breaking through its shell. Its strategic location along the route to Hatay, designated as a UNESCO city, and its proximity to the prominent Arsuz District, known for holiday and leisure tourism, along with the tourist visits and investments facilitated by the İskenderun–Cyprus ferry connections, have brought the city to a certain level in terms of tourism. The district entered a period of recovering from the earthquake disaster and embarking on a reconstruction phase. In the recent period, it is conceivable to bifurcate the city's developmental trajectory into pre-earthquake and post-earthquake phases. If the necessary lessons are learned, disasters will not lead to fatal consequences. Therefore, embarking on investments and restorations with the necessary precautions and regulations will also provide an opportunity for creating a modern city. The study has been conducted with a sustainable approach, focusing on the evaluation of resources. Essentially, sustainability is not about the non-utilisation of resources. It is the holistic correlation and assessment of resource utilisation through economic, environmental, and societal structures and systems. With this perspective in mind, the efforts to ensure the continuation of tourism elements in the İskenderun District, and to pass its existence on to future generations, have been approached with a sustainable tourism standpoint. The aim is to contribute to the tourism destination presence of the İskenderun District.
