Synopsis

Food is all edible plant and animal tissues that must be consumed to maintain and improve health. Carbohydrate, protein, fat, water, vitamins and minerals are defined as nutrients. The correct and sufficient intake of these nutrients in order to ensure the continuation of life, growth, development and protection of health is called nutrition.

Any activity that we do in order to suppress our hunger and just to fill our bellies is not an act of adequate and balanced nutrition.

While the necessary and correct intake of all nutrients in order to maintain health, improve the body, regenerate tissues and increase living standards is defined as adequate nutrition, the failure to meet the necessary and correct amount of food needed by the body to sustain life can be defined as malnutrition. This situation is termed as "malnutrition".

Nutrition is an important part of life for individuals and athletes to maintain their active exercise and functions. Sports nutrition is a special nutrition programme applied by the individual in order to maximise the performance he/she wants to show during both activity and competition according to the field of exercise. The ability of athletes' physiological and mental structures to focus on the sports branch they are actively interested in depends on training, sleep patterns as well as nutritional habits. This research aims to emphasise the importance of nutrition according to sports branches and to make a small contribution to researchers in the field. It will serve as a small resource to emphasise the importance of nutrition by compiling the researches on nutrition in the field.
