Synopsis

The sharing economy, also known as collaborative consumption or collaborative economy, represents one of the most important trends with a significant impact on the development of tourism. Commercial sharing platforms are systems that allow users to benefit from the advantages of a product or service without acquiring ownership of the product or service and are managed by marketers. However, consumers are more interested in sharing because these systems can minimise the costs of sharing and maximise the benefits derived from sharing. On the other hand, there are different criticisms against the sharing economy due to the fact that it represents a temporary consumption culture due to price-oriented ease of access, confusion regarding taxation, lack of clear boundaries regarding privacy, expansion of the informal economy and negative effects on human employment due to the fact that activities are mostly carried out in the digital environment. However, the positive contributions of the sharing economy to regional employment, positive environmental effects, and the close relationship between a sharing economy and the tourism sector in a period of high demand and supply, the issue needs to be examined academically. In this context, this study aims to examine how the sharing economy affects destinations, tourism services and tourist behaviours with the rapid change in the tourism sector.
