Synopsis

Language learning requires the balanced development of both oral and written skills. Learning a linguistically rich language such as Abaza necessitates a systematic and progressive approach. This textbook has been designed to support students in understanding the fundamental rules of the language and applying them in everyday use. It aims to help learners both expand their vocabulary and become familiar with literary texts. This bilingual textbook is the first instructional material within an integrated teaching and methodological complex designed for undergraduate students of philology in the field of Abaza language instruction. The work aims to achieve a basic level of proficiency. The instructional material consolidates the knowledge acquired in the introductory phonetic and grammatical course. The texts included in the textbook contribute to the development of learners’ vocabulary as well as their skills in written and spoken literary language. The book offers a variety of activities focused on reading and writing. Work with poetic texts is intended to develop correct pronunciation, to accustom the speech organs—particularly the oral articulatory apparatus—to the production of Abaza sounds, and to ensure the proper adjustment of the speech organs. The ultimate objective of this instructional material is to overcome learners’ inhibition when reading aloud and speaking before an audience; additionally, it aims to familiarize learners with their own voice in a foreign language and to establish correct intonation. The lexical material covered facilitates the memorization of texts in the target language. The material presented in the textbook serves as a step toward the systematic acquisition of Abaza grammar and is oriented toward achieving the A1–A2 basic proficiency levels.
