Abaza Poetry
Synopsis
Abaza poetry, as a significant component of cultural heritage, reflects the aesthetic and emotional dimensions of the language. A systematic learning process is essential for students to comprehend this rich literary tradition. This textbook has been designed as a guide aimed at developing both grammatical competence and literary understanding. It enables students to strengthen their oral and written expression while grasping the fundamental elements of the Abaza lyrical tradition. Analyzing poems and engaging in practical exercises helps students better understand the rhythm, rhyme schemes, and literary expressions of the language. Additionally, Turkish-supported materials are provided to enhance students’ independent study and translation skills. This bilingual Abaza poetry textbook serves as an introductory course, aiming to prepare students for oral and written literary language use and to provide foundational knowledge of Abaza lyrical poetry. The introductory sections focus on the characteristics of the lyrical genre as a literary work, its types, and key concepts in poetic theory, including lines, rhyme, and rhythm. The textbook includes original poems by twenty-seven prominent Abaza poets. All poetic texts are supplemented with vocabulary exercises, text-related questions, and grammatical practice. Furthermore, poetry texts and exercises intended for independent summer study in the Abaza-Turkish Translation course are also incorporated. To facilitate comprehension, the poems are presented with specialized formatting and layout. This textbook is designed for undergraduate students in the Department of Abaza Language and Literature.
