Synopsis
This study aims to examine the potential impact of the planned nuclear power plant in Sinop on regional tourism activities. Although nuclear energy is considered a strategic option in light of Turkey's growing energy demand and foreign dependency, this study provides a detailed examination of the historical development, technological structure and safety concerns associated with nuclear power plants. The study evaluated the national literature on the effects of nuclear power plants on tourism, emphasising that research conducted in Akkuyu and Sinop in particular showed that environmental, health and safety concerns dominate among the local population. The findings reveal that the construction of a nuclear power plant is expected to decrease tourism demand, and the perception of economic loss and uncertainty about the future of the sector has become widespread among tourism operators. However, the study also includes assessments from some studies suggesting that the tourist profile may not be significantly affected in the long term. The conclusion section presents policy recommendations such as increasing investment in renewable energy, informing the local population, implementing holistic planning that considers the relationship between tourism and energy, and conducting transparent environmental monitoring. Overall, the study emphasises the need to manage the potential risks of nuclear energy investments on regional tourism.
