Synopsis
Gears are power and motion transmission mechanisms that continue to be studied in terms of mechanical performance, weight, and especially wear resistance. Optimization studies in design methods and coating methods to increase surface quality and surface wear resistance in manufacturing continue to be carried out. With the increase in studies on functional gradient materials (FGM) and the possibility of manufacturing methods suitable for this type of material, research on the use of FGM in gear wheels is also increasing. They are preferred over steel materials, particularly because they can offer high wear resistance and high toughness values simultaneously. This study covers the mathematical methods and manufacturing techniques used in the design of FGM gear wheels. It addresses the advantages of manufacturing methods for gear wheels as well as their disadvantages, such as application difficulties.
