Synopsis

Spinal injuries, a major cause of disability, are traumatic injuries that cause impairment in sensory, motor, or autonomic functions, affecting the patient's functional status, independence, psychological and social well-being, and quality of life, and leading to increased morbidity and mortality. The impact of trauma causes various complications related to neurological function loss, respiration, circulation, musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal systems, as well as various problems related to immobilization, nutrition, and thromboembolic processes. Therefore, these traumas have both individual and societal effects, increasing the care and financial burden on families and healthcare services. A patient-centered systematic approach, a multidisciplinary team approach, and evidence-based care based on expert opinions should be implemented to manage care and reduce the extent of future disability, improve the quality of care, and reduce adverse patient outcomes. Furthermore, understanding the complications that may arise in these patients, preventing these complications, or ensuring their appropriate management will contribute to improving patients' quality of life and reducing morbidity and mortality.
