Synopsis

This study presents an examination of the Kurdish Movement in terms of “election” experiences and gaining “representation”. Although the Kurdish Movement parties have experienced various processes to date, it has been observed that they have been quite persistent in terms of “elections” and “representation” by remaining within democratic politics. Moreover, it is clear that the Kurdish Movement has presented experiences that differ and diversify from the National Vision Movement, which constitutes the tradition of Islamist parties, in terms of many party closures, party dissolutions, party mergers and establishing reserve parties in Turkish political life. Moreover, the first known examples of “peripheral” parties and movements that Şerif Mardin has constructed/positioned outside of Türkiye’s “center” typology have found a place in Turkish political life in the context of the National Vision Movement and the Kurdish Movement. However, although the National Vision parties have been subject to closure cases and political bans, it cannot be said that they have faced harsher and more extensive interventions, including large-scale arrests and trustees, locally and generally, like the Kurdish Movement parties. In this respect, it has been seen that the Kurdish Movement insists on three issues: “forming a party”, political participation (elections) and gaining political representation. These three elements constitute the basic tools and field of a democratic representation struggle in democratic political regimes. This study explains the local and general struggle of the Kurdish Movement in a 40-year period.
