Synopsis

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of trade openness on human development in Turkic States. The effects of trade openness and financial development index on life expectancy at birth, which is one of the human development indicators, were investigated. Member countries of the Turkic Commonwealth of States (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan) were included in the study. Panel data analysis was carried out with annual data for the period 2000-2022. In the analyses, in line with the information obtained as a result of the preliminary tests, the second generation Pedroni (1999, 2004) panel cointegration test, which is preferred in case of heterogeneity, was applied. As a result of this test, it was determined that the variables were cointegrated. Thereupon, the PDOLSMG estimator was used to estimate the long-term coefficients. The findings reveal that trade openness has a positive effect on life expectancy at birth in Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, and financial development has a positive effect on life expectancy at birth in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
