Synopsis

Organizations are social systems where conflicting expectations, contradictory demands, and persistent tensions coexist. One of the most significant examples of these tensions is the relationship between employee empowerment and controlling management. Employee empowerment is examined as one of the fundamental aims of positive and modern management, supporting employee autonomy and participation in decision-making. Controlling management, on the other hand, is an approach that directs employee behavior and is often viewed with negative connotations. However, as mentioned in this chapter, the distinction between these two approaches is not always so sharp. Especially in organizations where uncertainty, trust issues, and performance pressure are observed, empowerment and control mechanisms become intertwined. Therefore, employee empowerment and controlling management are not considered opposite poles of opposition, but rather a duality that can coexist simultaneously in the same organization and in the same managerial behavior. In this chapter of the book, the relationship between employee empowerment and controlling management approaches is examined using a duality approach, outside of the generally accepted assessments in the literature. To this end, the chapter discusses how the tension between these two opposing concepts arises simultaneously, how it is sustained in organizations, and its individual and organizational consequences. It is also emphasized that the relationship between empowerment and control is not simply a matter of choice, but rather that these two concepts form a situational, manageable, and complementary organizational duality.
