Synopsis
In intensive care units (ICUs), central venous catheters (CVCs) provide important vascular access for many clinical applications such as medication and fluid therapy, parenteral nutrition, hemodynamic monitoring, and blood transfusion. However, the use of CVCs may also bring various risks such as catheter-related bloodstream infections, thrombosis, and mechanical complications. For this reason, correct catheter insertion, proper maintenance, and early recognition of complications are of great importance in terms of patient safety. Intensive care nurses take an active role in processes such as monitoring the catheter, performing dressing changes, applying infection control measures, and maintaining catheter patency. Hand hygiene, the use of aseptic techniques, maximum sterile barrier precautions, and the application of appropriate antiseptics are among the main approaches in preventing infections. As a result, the knowledge and skills of nurses and their practices based on up-to-date guidelines in central venous catheter management contribute to increasing the quality of patient care and reducing complications.
