Synopsis

Maternal health remains a critical global health priority, with high maternal and neonatal mortality rates particularly in low- and middle-income countries, reflecting profound health inequities. Traditional healthcare models alone are insufficient to address these structural challenges, while digital health technologies offer significant opportunities to enhance access and continuity of maternal care. Tele-nursing and mobile health (mHealth) applications expand the scope of nursing care by providing remote monitoring, counseling, risk assessment, and health education during antenatal and postnatal periods. SMS-based interventions, mobile applications, and wearable devices facilitate remote physiological monitoring, improving service access and enabling timely emergency obstetric interventions, especially in resource-limited settings. Digital nursing initiatives such as Mobile Midwife, MomConnect, Safe Delivery App, MMitra, and RapidSMS have demonstrated increased maternal health awareness and antenatal care engagement. However, the lack of long-term and methodologically robust studies highlights the need for further evaluation of digital interventions' effectiveness. In conclusion, telehealth and mobile care models are strategic tools that expand maternal health service coverage, reduce care inequities, and support the achievement of global health targets. Systematic integration of these technologies into healthcare systems and strengthening nurses’ digital competencies are essential to improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
