Synopsis

The city of Cizre, one of the deeply rooted centers of the Islamic scholarly tradition, has long stood not merely as a place of settlement but as a distinguished intellectual milieu where knowledge, culture, and civilization have developed in close interaction. Among the most prominent figures nurtured by this rich scholarly environment are the brothers Majd al-Dīn, ʿIzz al-Dīn, and Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn Ibn al-Athīr. These eminent scholars left an enduring mark on the history of Islamic thought and scholarship. The works they produced in the fields of history, ḥadīth, tafsīr, fiqh, and Arabic language and literature not only reflected the intellectual accumulation of their own era but also became indispensable reference sources for scholars in subsequent centuries.

Beginning their scholarly careers in Cizre and later continuing their intellectual activities in Mosul-one of the major centers of learning of the period-the Ibn al-Athīr brothers lived during a time dominated by major political powers such as the Zengids, Ayyubids, and Seljuks. In addition to their scholarly contributions, they also assumed significant administrative and cultural roles within these political structures. In this respect, they stand out not only as prolific authors but also as influential figures who participated in shaping the intellectual and socio-political climate of their time.

The present volume offers a comprehensive examination of the scholarly legacy of the Ibn al-Athīr brothers, addressing their works within their historical context, methodological approaches, and contributions across various academic disciplines. Prepared with contributions from scholars affiliated with different universities and countries, this book aims to reassess the intellectual heritage of this remarkable scholarly family. In doing so, it seeks both to reconnect the legacy of the Ibn al-Athīr brothers with contemporary academic scholarship and to contribute to a deeper understanding of the long-standing intellectual tradition centered in Cizre.
