Synopsis

Chronic kidney disease and dialysis treatment represent a multidimensional health condition that affects not only physical health but also psychological, cognitive, and social functioning. The high prevalence of psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, delirium, and cognitive impairment among dialysis patients underscores the necessity of adopting a biopsychosocial approach in the assessment and management of this population. In this context, care should not be limited to the physiological aspects of the disease but should be addressed within a holistic framework that also encompasses psychological and social dimensions.

All healthcare professionals involved in the care of dialysis patients assume critical responsibilities in the early identification of psychiatric symptoms, as well as in the planning and monitoring of appropriate interventions. Systematic screening practices, patient and family education, support for treatment adherence, and addressing psychosocial needs constitute essential components of effective care. In this process, it is of paramount importance to adopt a patient-centered care approach and to consider individual patient needs. The multidisciplinary approach enables collaboration among various disciplines, including nephrology, psychiatry, nursing, dietetics, and social work, thereby facilitating a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s biological, psychological, and social needs. Effective communication, coordination, and collaboration within the team are key elements that enhance continuity and quality of care and positively influence clinical outcomes. In conclusion, strengthening the multidisciplinary approach in the management of psychiatric conditions among dialysis patients is crucial not only for symptom control but also for improving treatment adherence, enhancing quality of life, and reducing mortality risk. The systematic integration of psychosocial dimensions into clinical practice and the widespread implementation of holistic care models are essential for improving long-term outcomes in this patient population.
