Synopsis
The tourism sector, which holds a significant place in the economy, constantly needs to renew itself in accordance with changing and developing conditions and the innovative preferences of tourists. In this regard, dark sky tourism emerges as one of the new and promising tourism areas. Light pollution, which has become increasingly prominent in recent years and refers to excessive and improper lighting, is causing the dark sky to become a rare natural resource. The importance of dark skies and dark sky tourism is increasing in the face of light pollution. Dark sky, a rare natural resource that attracts people’s attention, is also becoming an area of increasing interest for the tourism sector. Dark sky parks, created in dark sky areas where the night sky can be observed and various nighttime activities can be offered to visitors, contribute to the development and sustainability of the tourism sector and also yield positive results for the economy. On the other hand, these parks also contribute to the development of the local regions where they can be established. Studies in this field show that dark sky parks provide positive economic benefits. The aim of this study is to demonstrate, with the help of examples, the positive contributions of dark sky parks to the tourism sector, the general economy, and rural development. To this end, this study will first provide general information about the place of the tourism sector in the economy and dark sky parks. Subsequently, examples of dark sky parks will be given, and their economic and financial impacts will be evaluated using these examples. In conclusion, it is argued that dark sky parks, which are attracting increasing interest in the tourism sector, can contribute to the creation of new job opportunities, rural development, and increased tourism and tax revenues.
