Synopsis

Graphic design has evolved beyond a discipline that merely produces visual artifacts based on aesthetic concerns; it has become a multidisciplinary field of research and practice that intersects with technology, art, communication, culture, psychology, and computer science. The rapid pace of digital transformation, the integration of artificial intelligence into creative production processes, the growing emphasis on user experience in design decisions, and the reinterpretation of cultural heritage through contemporary design approaches have introduced new perspectives to graphic design research. These developments have made it essential to address graphic design not only from a practical standpoint but also through theoretical, analytical, and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Developed with this understanding, Theoretical Applications in Graphic Design 1 brings together original scholarly studies that examine contemporary research topics in graphic design through both theoretical frameworks and practical applications. Contributed by experts from different universities, this volume reflects the multidisciplinary nature of contemporary graphic design and serves as a comprehensive academic resource.

The chapters explore a broad range of current topics, including the formation of aesthetic language in AI-assisted game production and a comparative visual analysis of large language models; the role of typography in shaping player experience within game interfaces; the reinterpretation of Turkish mythology in contemporary graphic design; hand-drawn aesthetics and hybrid production workflows in motion graphics; user-oriented evaluations of visual information panels in Ankara’s public transportation system; the application of Gestalt principles in infographic design; cognitive ergonomics and the role of motion graphics in complex wayfinding systems; AI-based visual reinterpretations of the legendary figure Dede Korkut; permanence and visual aging in graphic design products; the historical representation of Turkish figures in Central European coats of arms; and accessible interface design for airport kiosks intended for users with disabilities.

The primary objective of this volume is to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical applications in graphic design, offering new perspectives on contemporary design challenges while contributing to future-oriented design approaches. Rather than focusing solely on design outputs, the book comprehensively addresses key research areas such as user experience, artificial intelligence, cultural identity, information design, cognitive ergonomics, motion graphics, typography, and accessible design.

The constantly evolving nature of graphic design encourages researchers and designers to reconsider emerging technologies, changing user expectations, and contemporary visual communication practices. The studies presented in this volume examine these transformations not only from technological perspectives but also through cultural, historical, aesthetic, and user-centered dimensions. In doing so, they aim to contribute to the development of new research directions within the ongoing evolution of graphic design.

Theoretical Applications in Graphic Design 1 is intended as a valuable academic resource for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, academics, and design professionals working in graphic design, visual communication design, digital media, animation, user experience (UX/UI), information design, AI-assisted design, and cultural studies. We believe that the theoretical discussions and practical applications presented in this volume will make significant contributions to graphic design scholarship, design education, and professional practice while inspiring future research in the field.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all contributing authors whose valuable work made this volume possible. We hope that this book will contribute meaningfully to academic research, design education, and professional practice in the field of graphic design.
