Synopsis

Today, tourism is shifting toward new alternatives under the influence of changing consumer expectations and an experience-oriented approach to consumption. In this context, space tourism is emerging as a new and noteworthy form of tourism, thanks to technological advancements and private-sector investments. Encompassing various applications-from orbital and suborbital flights to weightless environment experiences-space tourism is considered among the tourism activities of the future. This study examines the transformation taking place in the tourism industry within the framework of the postmodern understanding of tourism and analyzes space tourism, which has emerged as a result of this transformation. By examining the current state and future potential of space tourism, this study aims to evaluate Turkey’s potential in this field and offer a perspective on the future of the tourism industry. Based on a literature review, this study examines the fundamental concepts and existing research related to space tourism. The findings indicate that space tourism offers significant economic and tourism-related opportunities for Turkey and could play an effective role in the future development of the tourism industry; however, due to the risks it currently poses in terms of cost, health, and safety, it does not yet hold a significant share of the tourism market.
