Synopsis

Whether it is sustainability or preservation measures in the physical environment, the issues of energy and material-furniture consumption (paper, equipment, etc.) pose significant problems for archival preservation and sustainability. These problems are of such a depth that they can become obstacles to archival preservation and sustainability, or at least give rise to strong objections to it. Every archival activity prioritizes fossil and other energy consumption and even strongly encourages the use of other materials and equipment such as paper and equipment. All of this is consumption that undermines the spirit of archival preservation and sustainability and contradicts the meaning of both concepts (archival preservation and archival sustainability). Therefore, it would be appropriate to discuss what needs to be done to achieve archival preservation together with sustainability as a final sentence here. The final point in this discussion is the principle of clear and explicit replacement of everything consumed for preservation. This principle is the key to sustainable conservation. This is exactly what archives need to do for preservation and sustainability activities, i.e. to ensure archival preservation in line with the principles of sustainability while at the same time replacing consumed energy and worn out equipment. This implies that preservation and sustainability need to be managed in relation to the circular economy. In short, archival preservation and archival sustainability can only be achieved if archival institutions replace the fossil-based energy they consume with green energy production and successfully implement the recycling of worn-out equipment, including paper.
