Synopsis

Archaeological excavation sites and elements of historical heritage are under high risk in the face of natural disasters. This situation threatens the transmission of cultural values to future generations. The aim of the research is to develop strategies that will contribute to the sustainability of archaeological sites by analyzing the impacts of disaster risks on cultural heritage. A mixed-method approach has been adopted, and disaster risk maps, statistical data, and national/international institutional reports have constituted the quantitative data sources. Literature review, case analyses, and systematic evaluation of existing studies have been used as qualitative data collection techniques. It has been emphasized that cultural heritage should be preserved not only as physical structures but also in terms of the collective memory of societies. It has been revealed that insufficient post-disaster response capacity may lead to permanent losses. In this context, analyses carried out specifically for the province of Çanakkale have identified the historical and strategic importance of the region. The research findings indicate that disaster plans should be developed and cooperation with local stakeholders should be strengthened for effective risk management. The developed approach serves as a guide for implementing institutions. Moreover, it supports a method integrated with disaster management in the protection of cultural heritage. As a result, this study will contribute to the literature and provide a theoretical basis for decision-making processes at the local and national levels.
