Synopsis

In this chapter, the integration of artificial intelligence into media literacy education is discussed from a theoretical and critical perspective. In the media environment of the digital age, the habits of accessing, interpreting, questioning, analyzing and producing data have changed; this change has taken media literacy beyond its traditional definitions. Artificial intelligence has significant effects especially in combating disinformation, questioning the source of data and increasing critical awareness. Therefore, the development of media literacy skills is both a necessity of the digital age and a bulwark against the negative consequences of using artificial intelligence tools unconsciously. At this point, artificial intelligence has the potential to be not only a tool of informatics, but also a component that can restructure the pedagogical goals of media literacy. Based on this perspective, this chapter reviews the existing literature on artificial intelligence and media literacy and examines how artificial intelligence applications can support media literacy education. The historical development of artificial intelligence, types of artificial intelligence, and the intersection points of artificial intelligence and media literacy concepts are evaluated within the framework of the theoretical literature. In addition, the ethical, cultural and political risks that arise with the use of artificial intelligence technologies in educational contexts are also highlighted. In conclusion, it is argued that artificial intelligence should be included in media literacy education from a critical and ethical perspective.
