Synopsis

With the new technologies changing rapidly in today’s digital world, learners try to seek alternative education systems other than the formal education. As the need for education has increased, so has the importance of access to more flexible and accessible ways of learning. Therefore, distance and open education becomes more important and their meanings with their functions also change accordingly. Therefore it will be useful to go over these concepts. In this part of the chapter the concepts of distance education and open education will be explained thoroughly. The definitions, advantages and disadvantages, histories and applications of these concepts will be given within these terms. Before moving on to distance and open education, learning types and non-traditional learning types are also described to understand these concepts better.
