Synopsis

Tourism sector is seen as a driving force for economic growth and development. In recent years, globalisation, population growth and technological advances in the fields of transportation and communication have made the tourism sector one of the main and priority economic sectors for both developed and developing countries. However, recent studies have revealed that tourism is heavily dependent on the energy sector and this has led to an increasingly important relationship between tourism and environmental quality. In this context, this study analyses the impact of tourism and renewable energy consumption on economic growth and environmental quality in Mediterranean countries using a panel data analysis technique for the period 2000-2020. In the empirical findings, according to the results of the first model, the effects of tourism, renewable energy consumption and carbon emissions on economic growth are significant. Increases in tourism and renewable energy consumption increase economic growth, while increases in carbon emissions decrease economic growth. In the results of the second model, the effect of tourism on carbon emission is statistically insignificant, while the effect of renewable energy consumption and economic growth on carbon emission is significant.
