Synopsis
Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a degenerative spinal disease that is quite common in adults. The natural course of the disease can be slow in onset, but it can also progress rapidly, leading to severe rigidity and loss of strength. Diagnosis involves a detailed physical examination and a combination of various imaging methods. Degenerative, traumatic, neurological, and vascular diseases are important in differential diagnosis and require a multidisciplinary approach. There are various surgical options consisting of conservative treatment and anterior and/or posterior procedures.
