Perinatal Period in Disasters: Challenges and Management Approaches.
Synopsis
Although natural or man-made disasters affect the whole society, women, especially pregnant women, constitute one of the most vulnerable groups in disaster processes. Pregnancy is a special period in terms of physiological and psychosocial aspects. Disasters experienced during this period may have short and long-term effects on the health of both the pregnant woman and the fetus. Meeting the needs of pregnant women before, during and after disasters in a timely and effective manner is of vital importance for the protection of mother-baby health. In this context, midwifery services should be planned and carried out in a comprehensive and coordinated manner in disaster management processes.
