Synopsis

In today’s world, the rapidly increasing reproductive health needs of adolescents require special attention. The earlier onset of sexual activity, combined with a lack of knowledge about sexuality and contraceptive methods, puts adolescents at greater risk for unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Furthermore, early childbearing poses a significant barrier to the educational, social, and economic advancement of young women.

Studies indicate that as the age and educational level of pregnant adolescents decrease, their self-esteem also tends to decline. Their self-care capacity and overall quality of life are negatively affected. Moreover, adolescent mothers—who are still children themselves and often not yet ready for motherhood—may struggle with the stress of child-rearing, which can lead to neglect or abuse of their infants.

In the care of adolescent pregnancies, healthcare professionals, especially nurses, play a crucial role in the physical and psychological assessment of the mother, identifying care needs, and providing education and counseling services.
