Synopsis
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) during pregnancy are a significant risk factor for both maternal and fetal mortality. Conditions such as advanced maternal age, obesity, hypertension, and preeclampsia can lead to serious complications during pregnancy. Pregnancy induces substantial changes in the maternal hemodynamic system, which can exacerbate pre-existing cardiovascular diseases or lead to the emergence of new cardiac disorders. The management of cardiovascular diseases requires a multidisciplinary team approach, in which midwifery care plays a critical role.
Within the scope of this book chapter, the focus is on cardiovascular physiology during pregnancy, pregnancy-related cardiovascular diseases, diagnostic and treatment approaches, and the importance of midwifery care during the prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. Topics such as preconception counseling, multidisciplinary care, risk classification, modern diagnostic methods, and management strategies specific to cardiovascular diseases in pregnancy are discussed in detail.
Recent studies have shown that the application of accurate diagnostic methods, implementation of multidisciplinary management models, and the integration of digital health solutions contribute to reducing maternal mortality and morbidity rates in pregnant women with cardiovascular conditions. Midwives play a central role in patient education, risk management, and postpartum care throughout the pregnancy process.
