Synopsis

Fetal Growth Restriction – also known as intrauterine growth restriction – is a common pregnancy complication that may be associated with many adverse perinatal outcomes.
There is no complete consensus regarding the terminology, etiology, and diagnostic criteria of fetal growth restriction, and the optimal management and timing of delivery in these pregnancies should also be discussed.
Differentiating between a fetus that is small due to an underlying pathological condition and has not reached its potential growth, and a structurally small fetus that has achieved its growth potential, presents a distinct challenge.
The aim of this text is to review the subject of fetal growth restriction by focusing on terminology, etiology, diagnostic and monitoring tools, and to provide a guideline for its management and timing of delivery.
