Synopsis

Food inflation is a significant indicator reflecting price fluctuations in essential consumer goods and has a direct impact on household budgets. The food and beverage sector stands out with its relatively resilient structure against economic fluctuations and is considered a strategic area for investors. This study examines the effects of inflation specifically on the food and beverage sector and aims to analyze the relationship between food inflation and the BIST Food and Beverage Index (XGIDA), which includes companies operating in this sector and listed on Borsa Istanbul. The study utilizes monthly data covering the period from June 1, 2015, to June 1, 2025, and employs the Toda-Yamamoto causality analysis as the research method. The variables used in the analysis are the monthly Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages inflation rate announced by TURKSTAT and the BIST Food and Beverage Index (XGIDA). The results of the study indicate that, during the specified period, Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages inflation (GENF) is a causal factor for the BIST Food and Beverage Index (XGIDA).
