Synopsis

Rhythm constitutes a fundamental building block of almost all forms of art, particularly music. In music, rhythm is based on the alternation of sound and silence and appeals to the ear; in visual arts, it creates a sense of perception and order by relying on the repetition of colors, lines, shapes, and spatial elements, appealing to the eye. Within this order, brush movements, perspective, and formal motions are seen in painting; volume, surface rhythm, and figure repetition in sculpture; arches, windows, and columns in architecture; tempo, timing, and variation in music; spacing, curves, and repetition of letters in calligraphy. The main purpose of rhythm in art is to create a sense of unity, continuity, and movement in the work by adhering to a certain structure. It can be considered the core dynamic of the relationship both the listener and the viewer establish with the work. Existing since the creation of the world, rhythm stands out in music as a crucial structural element that carries the melody and conveys emotional intensity within a performed piece.

This qualitative study, which employs document analysis and a descriptive analytical method, aims to examine the role and impact of rhythm in both auditory and visual art forms from an interdisciplinary perspective. To maintain thematic consistency and focus on the classical disciplines of art, the study is limited to painting, music, sculpture, calligraphy, and architecture. As a central concept in cultural transmission and aesthetic experience, rhythm plays a parallel role in both auditory and visual arts, making it one of the most powerful elements that builds bridges between artistic disciplines. In this context, rhythm is not merely a regulator of time, but also a dynamic element that shapes meaning. Revealing its function as a connector among the arts is of significant importance.
