Synopsis

This study aims to contribute to the existing literature by subjecting al-Amālī, one of the foundational works of Zaydī ḥadīth literature, to a comparative analysis with the four Sunan collections of Abū Dāwūd (d. 275/889), al-Tirmidhī (d. 279/892), al-Nasāʾī (d. 303/915), and Ibn Mājah (d. 273/887), which are regarded as principal sources of the Sunnī ḥadīth tradition. Aḥmad b. ʿĪsā b. Zayd (d. 246/861) was a prominent figure within Zaydiyya in the 3rd/9th century, and his work al-Amālī represents an important source reflecting the sect’s distinctive characteristics and accumulated ḥadīth heritage. Together with earlier and later works, al-Amālī constitutes a core component of the ḥadīth infrastructure of the Zaydī tradition. Notably, alongside narrations and statements transmitted from the Imāms and muḥaddiths of the Ahl al-Bayt, the work also includes reports attributed to certain ṣaḥāba (companions) and rāwīs (narrators) who hold a significant place in the Sunnī scholarly milieu, a feature that warrants closer examination. In this respect, identifying similarities and differences between al-Amālī, which occupies a privileged position within Zaydiyya, and its Sunnī counterparts in terms of isnād preference and matn selection is of particular importance. Given that the works under consideration belong to the same century, reflect the sunan genre in their structural arrangement, exhibit comparable compositional and stylistic features, and are regarded as foundational sources of the traditions they represent, the present study undertakes a comparative analysis of their respective ḥadīth materials. Thus, it is revealed to what extent al-Amālī’s work, which reflects a different tradition of ḥadīth accumulation compared to its counterparts, the four Sunan, parallels these works.
