Synopsis

Digital readiness is a key factor that shapes the competitiveness and economic prosperity of countries. This section aims to examine the link between the Network Readiness Index and gross domestic product per capita. The index brings together digital infrastructure, human capital, governance, and the concrete outcomes of digitalization. Data from 134 countries for the year 2024 are used. Income data come from the World Bank, and index scores come from the Portulans Institute. The method relies on a comparative analysis that tests the direction and strength of the link between the index and income. The adequacy of measurement quality is reviewed. The consistency of results is checked with alternative definitions and sensitivity controls. The findings show that countries with higher digital readiness have a clear advantage in per capita income. A significant share of income differences can be linked to digital readiness. Prosperity grows stronger when the four sub-dimensions—Technology, People, Governance, and Impact—advance together. It is understood that infrastructure investments should be designed together with skill development, trust and regulation, data governance, and inclusive practices. The study shows that countries which advance the four sub-dimensions of digital access and network investments at the same time generate higher economic prosperity.
