Synopsis

YouTube is one of the most widely used digital platforms among children. Despite age restrictions, users from all age groups—including very young children—regularly access the platform and create content. Over time, some of these children, often referred to as "pre-adolescent stars," accumulate large followings and evolve into influencers who generate significant income through advertising and sponsorships. This rise in child influencers coincides with children’s growing reliance on digital technologies. As a result, brands targeting young audiences have shifted their advertising investments from traditional media to digital platforms—especially YouTube. Child influencers promote products through unboxing videos, tutorials, reviews, and challenge-based content, effectively acting as peer role models and contributing to brand marketing strategies. Since YouTube operates on user-generated content, the unpaid labor children invest in content production raises ethical and legal concerns regarding digital child labor and potential exploitation. Furthermore, the promise of fame and financial reward prompts questions about how children perceive their involvement—whether as a form of play or as legitimate work. Unlike traditional media celebrities, child influencers often appear more relatable and authentic due to the amateur quality of their content. This perceived authenticity fosters Para social relationships, wherein young viewers form emotional attachments to influencers. These dynamics enhance trust and increase the influencers' persuasive power. This section explores the culture and economy surrounding child celebrity on YouTube, examines whether content creation constitutes labor or a potential profession, and analyzes Para social relationships through the lens of media studies, childhood studies, and digital labor scholarship.
