Synopsis

Today, children make extensive use of digital media platforms, and video-sharing sites such as YouTube have become an integral part of their daily lives. The content on YouTube frequently includes both explicit and implicit advertisements promoting the consumption of junk food products; this situation can negatively affect children’s eating habits, preferences, and attitudes. Food advertising is one of the most influential factors on children’s eating behaviors and food choices. Especially on digital platforms like YouTube, children are heavily exposed to advertisements for junk food and products with low nutritional value. Encountering such advertisements while being entertained leads to the development of unhealthy eating habits. Since the majority of foods marketed through online food advertising are high in fat, sugar, and salt, these advertisements contribute to childhood obesity. As strong measures are needed to prevent this situation, many countries have introduced restrictions on advertisements related to unhealthy foods. The measures taken by countries to protect children from commercial influences indicate that global public health has become a priority. The purpose of this section is to examine the research conducted on junk food consumption on YouTube and to present the existing regulations in the field of advertising directed at children, as well as the practices aimed at protecting them from such advertisements.
