Synopsis
The earthquakes that struck Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, were described as the "disaster of the century." While the social and economic impacts of the earthquakes persisted, Turkey held local elections on March 31, 2024. Due to the profound effects of the February 6 earthquakes, political parties emphasized disaster policies in their election manifestos. The disaster policies outlined in the election manifestos of the CHP and AK Parti, the two parties that received the most votes in the 2024 local elections, were subjected to discourse analysis and compared. The study aimed to examine the disaster policies in the CHP and AK Parti’s 2024 election manifestos, identifying similarities and differences. Within the scope of the study, differences were detected in the disaster policies of the parties in the 2024 local elections. The analysis of the pledges related to disaster policies revealed that the ideological identities of the parties were reflected in their commitments for both pre-disaster preparedness and post-disaster recovery. In its election manifesto, the AK Parti devoted more space to disaster policies compared to the CHP.
