Synopsis

The aim of this study is to reveal how the concept of the other is viewed in Turkish culture from past to present. In order to understand how Turkish society defined the other in the past, how it was handled in literary works was examined. In pre-Islamic Turkish literature, the other refers to an aggressive, foreign enemy. In post-Islamic Turkish literature, the word infidel was added to the adjectives of this enemy. In the works about the War of Independence, the Westerner is one of the words that express the other. Over time, in Turkish literature, the other has defined race, ethnicity, religion, ideology and those who are not one of us. However, in works written in 1990 and later, the perspective on the other has softened. The other has transformed from the enemy to be fought to the unknown and the curious. Qualitative research method was used to understand the perspective of the other in our culture today. The results of the study, which was analyzed with the MAXQDA program, show that the perspective on the concept of the other has changed over time and that the concept reflects a more inclusive and understanding perspective than in the past. When talking about the importance of being us, the participants mentioned the comfort zone it provides, the absence of disadvantaged groups, the elimination of material and moral deficiencies, the continuation of traditions, the sense of belonging and national consciousness. While the concept of the other used to refer to a dangerous, aggressive, feared enemy who is not me, who is not part of the “we” group, the participants' view of the other has changed with the age, experience and education they have gained over time. The existence of the other contributes to the formation of an individual's identity. The other has transformed from a feared enemy to someone who adds color and meaning to life and is not like us.
