Development of Health Tourism in Turkey and the World

Synopsis

Today, health tourism worldwide has a multidimensional structure and is rapidly developing across various sub-branches. The main categories of health tourism include medical tourism, thermal tourism (spa and wellness-focused tourism), tourism for the elderly and disabled, travel to health centers or private clinics for treatment, cosmetic surgery and dental services, and sanatorium-based treatment and rehabilitation practices. These sub-branches serve individuals' purposes not only for disease treatment but also for maintaining or improving their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Medical tourism, in particular, offers access to affordable and high-quality healthcare services for individuals seeking alternatives to expensive treatments. Thermal and wellness tourism, on the other hand, emphasizes the rejuvenation, stress reduction, and healthy living experiences offered by natural resources and spas. Furthermore, senior tourism and rehabilitation centers provide professional health and recreation opportunities for individuals with chronic conditions or those requiring long-term care. All these areas of activity contribute to the economic development of destinations and become strategic sectors that increase the competitiveness of countries in the international health tourism market.
